A combat medic stationed in Hawaii was honored Nov. 17 for her superior leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Staff Sgt. Margot Gebers, who enlisted in 2016, is assigned to Tripler Army Medical Center at Schofield Barracks, where she ensures that units are medically ready to deploy or redeploy, works with the reserve component and processes incoming soldiers. 

She was honored at the Angels of the Battlefield Awards, an annual event hosted by the Armed Services YMCA.

More than 100 years after 1st Lt. Thomas Beasley was killed in action in France, his family was presented with his Purple Heart and World War I campaign ribbon. 

Beasley, a member of the 5th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, was fighting in the front-line trenches when he was killed Oct. 5, 1918, in the Argonne Forrest sector. He died just before his 23rd birthday, and his widow, who was pregnant at the time, only received a telegram informing the family of his death. 

The Association of the U.S. Army has announced the recipients of its 2021 National Awards, which honor individuals for their selfless service and dedication to the Army and its soldiers.

Two members of the Association of the U.S. Army’s Board of Directors have once again made the “Wash100” list of influential executives in Washington, D.C.

Also making this year’s list are Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Army Gen. Paul Nakasone, commander of the U.S. Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency.

Wash100 is compiled by Executive Mosaic, an international leadership and media company based in Virginia, and then voted on to see who ranks at the top. This is the eighth year for the awards.

The Association of the U.S. Army honored the recipients of its 2020 National Awards Oct. 13 during the opening ceremony of AUSA Now, the association’s virtual annual meeting.

The awards honor individuals for their selfless service and dedication to the Army and its soldiers.

“We at AUSA are really proud of this year’s National Award recipients,” said retired Gen. Carter Ham, AUSA president and CEO. “From a group of extraordinary nominees, we have selected recipients whose selfless service and unparallel accomplishments best exemplify the ideals we celebrate at AUSA.”

Seven aviators and crew with the California Army National Guard were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for rescuing hundreds of people trapped by rapidly spreading wildfires over Labor Day weekend.

Flying UH-60 Black Hawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopters into areas of the Sierra National Forest that were engulfed in a firestorm of heat, smoke, wind and flames, the soldiers with the 40th Combat Aviation Brigade flew multiple missions in treacherous conditions between Sept. 5–8, lifting to safety 396 people and 27 animals.

The Association of the U.S. Army's highest honor for distinguished and selfless service is being awarded this year to The Army Family, which includes spouses, parents, siblings, children and the loved ones of American soldiers.

It is not the first time the George Catlett Marshall Medal has gone to a group instead of a person. In 2004, the Marshall Medal was awarded to The American Soldier.

The “Wash100” list of influential executives in Washington, D.C., includes two members of the Association of the U.S. Army’s Board of Directors, three Army generals and the secretaries of the Army and defense.

AUSA Chairman of the Board Phebe Novakovic makes the Wash100 list for the sixth time. She is General Dynamics’ chairman and CEO.
