Deterrence Requires Strong Partnerships

Strong partnerships are critical to deterring adversaries, particularly in the vast Indo-Pacific region, a panel of senior leaders said May 17 during the Association of the U.S. Army’s LANPAC Symposium and Exposition.

“I’m fond of saying, it doesn’t matter what the question is, the answer is partnerships,” said Lt. Gen Richard Burr, chief of the Australian army.

Speaking alongside Burr on the role of land forces in deterrence, Lt. Gen. Xavier Brunson, commanding general of I Corps and Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, agreed.

LANPAC 2020, an international symposium and exhibition dedicated to land forces in the Indo-Pacific, has been canceled by the Association of the U.S. Army.

The three-day event in Honolulu had been scheduled to begin May 19. Registered exhibitors and attendees are being individually notified.

North Korea Remains ‘Credible Threat’ to U.S.

North Korea remains a major national security challenge, Pentagon officials told Congress.

Testifying Jan. 28 before the House Armed Services Committee, John Rood, DoD’s undersecretary for policy, said North Korea “poses an ongoing, credible threat to the United States homeland, our allies in South Korea and Japan, in addition to undermining international arms control regimes and engaging in egregious human rights violations and abuses.”

“Predicting North Korea’s future behavior is always hazardous,” Rood said.

The 2019 LANPAC Symposium and Exposition, attended by more than 1,600 attendees and exhibitors, concluded May 23 with a reminder that the Indo-Pacific theater remains one of great challenge, but both the Army and industry have solutions.

This was the seventh consecutive year the Association of the U.S. Army has hosted the Pacific land forces event, which drew representatives from 24 nations in addition to U.S. military leaders from around the globe.
