The Army National Guard must prepare to face and define a new reality of war, the commander of Army Forces Command said. 

“We have to win the first fight,” Gen. Andrew Poppas said Oct. 9 during the MG Robert G. Moorhead National Guard and Army Reserve Breakfast at the Association of the U.S. Army’s 2023 Annual Meeting and Exposition. “We have to prepare for the battle today, especially in this uncertain world. … We have to be ready today.” 

The Army is launching a new pilot program that aims to improve access to child care for Army Reserve soldiers and their families, the service announced. 

Education benefits are vital to recruiting talented people into the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve, two senior officers told the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on defense.

Gen. Daniel Hokanson, chief of the National Guard Bureau, and Lt. Gen. Jody Daniels, chief of the Army Reserve and commander of Army Reserve Command, testified June 1 that tuition assistance and access to health care benefits are “vital for recruitment.”

Modernization of the National Guard and the Army Reserve is critical to balancing the Total Army as it transforms to meet the demands of future combat, said Gen. Andrew Poppas, commander of Army Forces Command.

Soldiers from the reserve components continue to deploy for missions around the world and respond to domestic missions, such as hurricane response in Florida, but “we’re also racing to meet another demand from the Total Army,” Poppas said Oct. 10 in remarks at the Association of the U.S. Army’s 2022 Annual Meeting and Exposition.

In her second year as Army secretary, Christine Wormuth faces many challenges, but she is also upbeat.

“I think the Army is in a good place,” Wormuth said in an interview in the Association of the U.S. Army’s 2022–2023 Green Book.

As the Army looks at restructuring to meet the demands of the future fight, the Army Reserve is poised to follow suit in the coming months with its own review of existing and future capabilities, the component’s top officer said.

“The active component has gone through a ‘night court’ equivalent of all of its formations and is making adjustments to the Total Army, … deciding which units are the most important and rank ordering them, and we will do that starting this fall,” said Lt. Gen. Jody Daniels, chief of the Army Reserve and commander of the Army Reserve Command.

The Association of the U.S. Army’s Coffee Series will feature Lt. Gen. Jody Daniels, chief of the Army Reserve and commanding general of the Army Reserve Command, on Aug. 3.

The in-person event will take place at AUSA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia. The event opens at 6:30 a.m. with coffee and networking. Daniels is scheduled to speak at 7:20 a.m.

It is free for military members, government employees and the media. All attendees must be vaccinated against COVID-19. Masks are optional.
