Amy Mingus, whose husband is retired Gen. James Mingus, the 39th Army vice chief of staff, is the first recipient of a new Army award that recognizes the lifetime achievements and contributions of Army spouses.

Named for one of the most influential spouses in Army history, the Julia Compton Moore Spouse Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Mingus on Feb. 6 at her husband’s retirement ceremony on Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall, Virginia, according to an Army news release.

Two members of the House Appropriations Committee have been awarded the Association of the U.S. Army’s 2025 Legislator of the Year award for their staunch and effective support of the Army and soldiers, Army civilians, veterans and their families.

Retired Command Sgt. Maj. Richard “Rick” Merritt, a veteran of more than 36 years of service, 25 of which he spent in the 75th Ranger Regiment, was named Honorary Sergeant Major of the Army during the Association of the U.S. Army’s 2025 Annual Meeting and Exposition.

“This is special,” Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Weimer said as he introduced Merritt on Oct. 15 at the conclusion of a professional development forum he hosted.

The Association of the U.S. Army has announced its six Best Chapter winners for 2025 based on their achievement and success in growing membership, hosting events, raising money for scholarships and other programs, and supporting units and recruiters.

More than 80 years after they took part in D-Day, the largest naval, air and land operation in history, members of the all-volunteer World War II Ranger battalions were honored with the Congressional Gold Medal.

In honor of the Army’s 250th birthday, the Association of the U.S. Army’s highest award for distinguished and selfless service is being presented this year to Army recipients of the Medal of Honor.

This isn’t the first time the George Catlett Marshall Medal has gone to a group instead of a person. Last year, the Marshall Medal was awarded to The Army Noncommissioned Officer. It was awarded to The Army Family in 2020 and to The American Soldier in 2004.

Eighty years after the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion deployed to Europe during World War II, its soldiers were honored with the Congressional Gold Medal.

Nicknamed the Six Triple Eight, the unit was the first and largest all-female, all-African American unit to deploy overseas during World War II. On April 29, with the two surviving members watching online, over 300 of the soldiers’ descendants and family members gathered on Capitol Hill for the presentation of the Congressional Gold Medal.
