Mentorship, planning your career moves in advance and being a strong member of the team are some of the key factors in achieving a successful Army career, a panel of senior leaders said during a discussion on Army women hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army.

Women are freer than ever to pursue career opportunities in the Army, including in previously closed combat arms specialties, but the path to maximizing a career in the Army is the same for men and women, the panelists said.

A panel of senior leaders will discuss women in the Army during an upcoming webinar hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army.

The event, part of The AUSA Noon Report series, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which secured for women the right to vote. 

The livestream event will begin at noon Eastern Aug. 24. The event is free, but registration is required here.

Retired Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Phyllis J. Wilson will soon become the new president of the Women in Military Service for America Foundation, succeeding retired Army Maj. Gen. Dee Ann McWilliams, the foundation announced Aug. 14.

The change will take effect Sept. 1.

The Army Women’s Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary by inducting service members and veterans spanning multiple generations into its Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Capitol Hill.

“Our country is better because of your service,” said Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, the keynote speaker and an Air Force veteran who served for 14 years as a pilot. “Our country is better because of your example. Our country is better because of your sacrifice.”

He thanked the honorees for being willing to serve and for being an example to other military and community members.

Three Army veterans are part of a group of 10 women selected to have their art on display in VA medical centers during Women’s History Month.

Pamela Corwin, Cara Myhre and Deveon Sudduth will have their artwork on display at medical centers as part of a celebration of women veteran artists. The initiative is part of a partnership between the VA’s Center for Women Veterans and the Veteran Artist Program.

Retired Cols. Karen O’Brien and Betty Yarbrough are among four new members of the Veterans Affairs Department Advisory Committee on Women Veterans.

Dr. O’Brien, the Army’s first female brigade surgeon, retired in 2014 after 27 years of service, including deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. She is now a compensation and pension physician for the Veterans Benefits Administration in American Lake, Wash.
