Our Chapter Honors PFC William Nakamura
PFC William Nakamura is important to Army history for his extraordinary bravery and service as a member of the U.S. Army’s 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit composed almost entirely of Japanese American soldiers during World War II. Despite facing racial discrimination at home, PFC Nakamura volunteered to fight for a country that had placed many Japanese Americans, including his own family, in internment camps. On July 4, 1944, in Italy, he single-handedly silenced enemy machine gun nests and provided cover for his platoon, actions for which he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. His heroism highlights both the valor of Japanese American soldiers and the complexities of loyalty and patriotism during a time of deep national prejudice, making him a powerful symbol in Army history and civil rights progress.
The Association of the United States Army is a nonprofit educational and professional development association serving America’s Army and supporters of a strong national defense. AUSA provides a voice for the Army, supports the Soldier, and honors those who have served in order to advance the security of the nation.
