Col. Kevin M. Felix, selected as the winner of the 2011 writing contest co-sponsored by AUSA’s Institute of Land Warfare and U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command’s Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) was awarded a prize of $1,000 Oct. 10 during AUSA’s Annual Meeting and Exposition. The check was presented by AUSA’s president, Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, USA, Ret., and Lt. Gen. Keith C. Walker, TRADOC’s deputy commanding general, and futures director, Army Capabilities Integration Center. The contest theme was "Capabilities Needed for the Army Future Force, 2025 and Beyond."Felix’s winning entry, "A Case for Human Dimension Training: Decision Science and its Potential for Improved Soldier Resilience and Decision Making at Every Level," examines decision science, a field that explores the interconnected influences of emotion, neuroscience and psychology in shaping human judgments.According to Felix, the soldier as teammate, team leader, decision-maker, member of a household and individual can benefit from current and future decision science research. It can start a positive chain reaction of better-informed decisions for the soldier at home and on the battlefield. The author argues that creating a cadre of "decision engineers" has the potential to bridge existing gaps between science and military application and to push decision science further, by looking for continuous applications within the domain of the soldier as an individual and as leader/decision-maker.The basic result of this research—greater emotional self-awareness for soldiers—can come about through the growth, understanding and application of decision science.Felix, a national security fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government when he entered the writing contest, now serves in ARCIC as the chief, Future Warfare Division. The paper was published by ILW as Land Warfare Paper 85 in October 2011 and was presented by Felix at AUSA’s Annual Meeting. It is available online at http://www.ausa.org/publications/ilw/Documents/LWP%2085%20Felix_web.pdf and can also be ordered by phone, (800) 336-4570, Ext. 630, or e-mail (ILWPublications@ausa.org).
