Mark Viney

Mark Viney is a retired U.S. Army Colonel with over 30 years of service culminating as Chief, Field Services Division, The Adjutant General Directorate, U.S. Army Human Resources Command.  During this capstone assignment, Mark influenced the Army HR Community’s culture shift from sustainment of counterinsurgency to large-scale combat operations, a strategic imperative he conceived while previously serving as Chief, G1 Plans, Operations & Exercises Division, U.S. Army Europe. 

After his military retirement, Mark joined a Big Four consulting firm, where he helped improve several organizations’ leadership development, HR management, strategic planning, and program management.  He currently works as an Organization Effectiveness Leader for a corporation that provides science, technology, and engineering solutions to governments and companies worldwide.

Continuing his lifetime of service to the nation one leader at a time, Mark established Viney Development Solutions LLC, where he supports clients with executive coaching, mentorship, group facilitation, publications and public speaking on leadership and national security topics, battlefield staff rides, and HR support to military training exercises.  As a military historian, Mark incorporates relevant historical insights into his work.  He has published 3 books on strategic and operational leadership.

Mark is an Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) Leadership Fellow, supporting AUSA’s mission to educate, inspire, and connect leadership development programs across the Army and its supporters.  He is also a mentor for The Citadel Military College of South Carolina’s Senior Cadet Mentor Program.

Mark began his military career as an enlisted infantryman in the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.  He served for 10 years as a mechanized infantry and cavalry officer, participating in operational deployments to Saudi Arabia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.  As an operationally focused Army HR manager for the remainder of his career, Mark developed unique expertise in HR plans & operations during multiple tours at the corps, combined joint task force, Army Service Component Command, and Army enterprise levels, including 3 tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Other key assignments included Director, U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center; Command Inspector General, U.S. Army Europe; and Director, Afghan Hands Program.

Colonel (Retired) Viney is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and holds a dual master’s degree in human resources development and public administration from Webster University, a certificate in strategy and policy development from the U.S. Army War College, and a certificate in executive coaching from the Center for Executive Coaching. 

Mark received 2 awards of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and 6 awards of the Army Meritorious Service Medal. 

Mark and his wife reside in Charleston, South Carolina and are proud parents of 4 children.
