Mentorship, Hard Work Keys to Successful Army Career

Mentorship, planning your career moves in advance and being a strong member of the team are some of the key factors in achieving a successful Army career, a panel of senior leaders said during a discussion on Army women hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army.

Women are freer than ever to pursue career opportunities in the Army, including in previously closed combat arms specialties, but the path to maximizing a career in the Army is the same for men and women, the panelists said.

A panel of senior leaders will discuss women in the Army during an upcoming webinar hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army.

The event, part of The AUSA Noon Report series, will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which secured for women the right to vote.

While women in the Army still face “many struggles” in achieving true gender equality, individual soldiers are making a difference in bringing change to the institution, the Army’s former top lawyer said.

“I believe it is our responsibility to grow the institution, and we do that by recognizing talent and bringing down the wall” of discrimination, retired Lt. Gen. Flora D. Darpino said Aug. 26 at an event hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army to mark Women’s Equality Day.

Military Women’s Memorial Announces New President

Retired Army Chief Warrant Officer 5 Phyllis J. Wilson will soon become the new president of the Women in Military Service for America Foundation, succeeding retired Army Maj. Gen. Dee Ann McWilliams, the foundation announced Aug. 14.

The change will take effect Sept. 1.

Female Soldiers, Veterans Honored for Service

The Army Women’s Foundation celebrated its 50th anniversary by inducting service members and veterans spanning multiple generations into its Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Capitol Hill.

“Our country is better because of your service,” said Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, the keynote speaker and an Air Force veteran who served for 14 years as a pilot. “Our country is better because of your example. Our country is better because of your sacrifice.”

He thanked the honorees for being willing to serve and for being an example to other military and community members.

SMA Dailey ‘Proud’ of New Roles for Army Women

Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey said he’s “proud of what we have done to integrate women into our Army for the last several years.”

Testifying before a House subcommittee about quality of life programs for soldiers and their families, Dailey said the Army recruited 14,000 women in the last year and 400 have signed up for combat arms.

Retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis says if confirmed as President-elect Donald Trump’s secretary of defense, he would take no actions to roll back policy changes allowing women to serve in combat jobs as long as they meet all standards for those assignments.
