Abrams Calls South Korea Evacuation a ‘Wicked Problem’

The nominee to become the top U.S. commander in Korea said the evacuation of civilians from the Korean Peninsula presents “a wicked problem,” but he is confident twice-a-year drills have prepared the U.S. military for the problem it faces.

He also stressed that the risk to civilians isn’t limited to the families of U.S. troops but threatens a wide population.

The top U.S. general in South Korea warns the world has entered the “second age” of ballistic missile proliferation. “This has made for a much more dangerous world,” said Army Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, commander of U.N. Command/Combined Forces Korea and U.S. Forces Korea, speaking via video at an Association of the U.S. Army event.

Army Plans THAAD Deployment to South Korea

The U.S. Army will deploy an advanced Terminal High Altitude Area Defense battery to South Korea by late summer in response to growing threats from communist North Korea, the commander of U.S. Forces Korea said.

“You’re going to see the deployment of a THAAD battery. This is an alliance decision. It will come in the next eight to 10 months,” Army Gen. Vincent K. Brooks said Nov. 4 at a seminar hosted by the Association of the Republic of Korea Army in Seoul, as reported by South Korean media. Brooks is also commander of U.N. Command and Combined Forces Command.
