New Greens Uniform Coming Soon to Soldiers

Distribution of the new Army Greens Service Uniform is underway at training installations, and the uniform is on track to be available to soldiers across the Army by spring 2021.

“The Army’s in the final stages of the program that consists of production and distribution,” Col. Stephen Thomas, project manager for soldier survivability in Program Executive Office Soldier, said during an Aug. 11 phone call. 

Fort Knox, Kentucky, received the first shipment of the Army Greens in July, outfitting a group of 70 soldiers in the Army's Recruiting and Retention College.

The ongoing limited user test of the Army Greens is going to result in a few minor changes but not in the overall color and design of the uniform, Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey said at a June 26 breakfast hosted by the Association of the U.S. Army’s Institute of Land Warfare.

Wearing the Army’s new business-wear uniform as he spoke, Dailey said early adopters are evaluating the uniform while the Army looks at manufacturing and logistics to determine quality, standards and what improvements are needed.

President Donald Trump is sold on the Army Greens uniform that is starting to appear around the force.

With Vice Chief of Staff Gen. James C. McConville present, Trump’s choice to be the next Army chief of staff, the commander in chief talked about increasing defense spending and then about the Army uniform.

“We are spending the biggest number of dollars we have ever spent,” Trump said, noting his first defense budget was $700 billion, the second was $716 billion and now the third, pending before Congress, asks for $750 billion.

‘Army Greens’ Adopted as New Uniform

The Army has announced that soldiers will begin wearing the “Army Greens” uniform as early as the summer of 2020, and the entire Army will be wearing the new service uniform by 2028, making official the long-anticipated adoption of the iconic World War II uniform known as “pinks and greens.”

In a statement posted on Veterans Day, the Army said Army Greens will become the everyday business wear uniform for all soldiers, returning the Army Blues Uniform to use as a formal dress uniform. The Army Combat Uniform will remain as the Army’s duty/field uniform.
