Retired Col. Roger Donlon, the first person in the Vietnam War and the first Green Beret to receive the Medal of Honor, is the subject of the latest graphic novel in the Association of the U.S. Army’s series on recipients of the nation’s highest valor award.

Medal of Honor: Roger Donlon tells of how then-Capt. Donlon disregarded multiple wounds and successfully led his 12-man Green Beret team as they held off an attack by a reinforced battalion of Viet Cong fighters in July 1964.

Army to Review Distinguished Service Cross Awards

The Army will review Distinguished Service Cross medals awarded to African American and Native American troops for their actions in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, the Pentagon announced.

The review, directed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to all the services, will examine whether the recipients of the Service Crosses warrant the Medal of Honor. The Distinguished Service Cross, which is awarded by the Army, the Navy Cross and the Air Force Cross are the nation’s second-highest valor awards, behind only the Medal of Honor.

The story of Lt. Col. William “Wild Bill” Donovan, the World War I hero who went on to lead the agency that would become the CIA, is featured in the latest graphic novel in the Association of the U.S. Army’s series on Medal of Honor recipients.

Donovan, the only American to have received the nation’s four highest awards, the Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Distinguished Service Medal and the National Security Medal, is well known for founding the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA.

Medal of Honor: Jacob Parrott tells of how Parrott and 23 other men volunteered during the Civil War to go nearly 200 miles into Confederate territory to steal a train and destroy tracks behind them as they sped north, all part of a plan to prevent reinforcements from interfering with an attempted capture of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Retired Col. Ralph Puckett, a legendary and revered Army Ranger who fought in Korea and Vietnam, received the Medal of Honor May 21 during a ceremony at the White House.

President Joe Biden presented the 94-year-old Puckett with the nation’s highest award for valor during a ceremony attended by South Korean President Moon Jae-in and other dignitaries.

Honored for his heroic actions more than 70 years ago during a vicious battle in the Korean War, Puckett is now one of the most highly decorated soldiers in U.S. history.

Medic Who Earned Medal of Honor in Vietnam Dies

Retired Lt. Col. Charles Hagemeister, a combat medic who received the Medal of Honor for saving wounded soldiers during a fierce firefight in Vietnam, died May 19 in Leavenworth, Kansas. He was 74.

Hagemeister, who at the time was a specialist fourth class after being drafted in 1966, was awarded the nation's highest military honor for his actions on March 20, 1967, when his platoon was sent to secure the village of Tan An and prevent the escape of North Vietnamese regulars, according to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

Legendary Ranger to Receive Medal of Honor

More than 70 years after his heroic actions during a vicious battle in the Korean War, retired Col. Ralph Puckett will receive the Medal of Honor during a ceremony at the White House.

President Joe Biden will present the nation’s highest award for valor to Puckett, a legendary Army Ranger who is now 94, on May 21. South Korean President Moon Jae-in will also attend the ceremony, the White House announced May 19.

The award would make Puckett one of the most highly decorated soldiers in U.S. history.
