Soldier Wins Rifle World Title

When Spc. Alison Weisz won the women’s 10-meter air rifle event at the 2022 International Shooting Sport Federation World Championship in Cairo in October, she became the first American woman to win the title in a rifle event since 1979.

Weisz’s win also earned her a spot to represent the U.S. in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Team Army Wins Big at 2022 Warrior Games

After a two-year hiatus because of COVID-19, Team Army dominated the 2022 Warrior Games, earning more than 130 gold, silver and bronze medals competing against athletes from across the military and around the world.

Team Army’s 63 members competed with more than 300 athletes from across DoD, Canada and Ukraine Aug. 19-28 in Orlando, Florida, according to the Army Recovery Care Program.

Army Athletes to Compete in Invictus Games

Fifteen Army athletes are slated to represent the U.S. in the upcoming Invictus Games, the service announced.

Delayed for two years by the COVID-19 pandemic, the games will take place April 16–22 in The Hague, Netherlands. It will feature wounded, ill or injured service members competing in events including archery, indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, track, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball, according to an Army press release.

Army Veterans Help Team Win Gold at 2022 Paralympics

Two Army veterans are now three-time Paralympic gold medalists after Team USA’s sled hockey team came out on top at the 2022 Paralympic Games in Beijing.

Jen Lee, the goaltender, and Rico Roman, a forward, had previously won gold at the 2014 and 2018 Paralympics.

On March 13, Team USA’s sled hockey team cemented its dominance with a 5-0 victory over Canada to win the gold medal. This is the team’s fourth consecutive and fifth overall Paralympic title.

Army Veterans Compete in 2022 Paralympic Games

Three Army veterans are representing Team USA at the 2022 Paralympic Games in Beijing. 

The Games began March 4 and will conclude March 13.

The U.S. Paralympic Team includes 67 members, according to a Feb. 21 Team USA press release. Twelve members of the team are military veterans, accounting for nearly a fifth of the team, according to the Team USA website.

While all Olympic athletes balance their sport with their other obligations, soldier-athletes and soldier-coaches balance their sport with service. 

Five soldier-athletes and four coaches will be among several others with Army ties to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, according to an Army World Class Athlete Program press release. The Games begin Feb. 4.

From retired Maj. Shawn Morelli’s first medal for Team USA in track cycling to Sgt. 1st Class Elizabeth Marks’ record-breaking gold medal performance, soldier-athletes shone at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Three active-duty soldiers and at least 16 veterans from across the services represented Team USA at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, which concluded Sept. 5.

In total, Team USA’s active-duty or former service members brought home nine medals.

Sgt. 1st Class Elizabeth Marks took silver in the 50-meter freestyle race on Aug. 25, bringing home Team USA’s first swimming medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. 

During the 50-meter freestyle preliminary heats, Marks broke a Paralympic record with a time of 33.16 seconds, according to Team USA. 

The Army took to Twitter to congratulate Marks, saying, “Congratulation[s] Sgt. 1st Class Elizabeth Marks!”

Three soldier-athletes will represent the U.S. and the Army in the upcoming Paralympics in Tokyo. 

Sgt. 1st Class Elizabeth Marks, a swimmer who won gold and bronze at the 2016 Paralympic Games, and Staff Sgt. John Wayne Joss III and Staff Sgt. Kevin Nguyen, who will both compete in shooting, are members of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program.

From a record-breaking gold medal performance to a devastating COVID-19 test result, 14 soldier-athletes from across the Army represented the U.S. at the Tokyo Olympics.

Most of the soldier-athletes who qualified for the Tokyo Olympics are part of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program. Three other soldiers, also from the World Class Athlete Program, went to the games as coaches.
