Curtis Machine Company, Inc.

Curtis Machine Company, Inc.

Curtis Machine Company, Inc. was founded in 1946 in a chicken house behind the Curtis family home.  Stuart Curtis, Sr. was night shift foreman at the age of twelve.  In 1964 Stuart returned to the family job shop after he had earned his bachelor of science and master of science degrees in engineering from Kansas State University.  Stuart immediately recognized that a product line was needed to stabilize the cash flow as well as the employment level.  He sat down with his slide rule and designed the standard gears (it took one week to design one gear thus two weeks to design a ratioed gear set) and gearboxes. These original gears and gearboxes are the still the core competency of Curtis Machine today.  Now the engineering department designs all component parts of a gearbox on the computer in remarkably less time. Janie Curtis, C.E.O. & John Curtis, President. They are shown with Curtis Machine’s Phoenix 280C Gleason bevel gear generator.

Today Curtis Machine Company, Inc. is a 74 year old Woman Owned Small Business (WOSB) that designs and manufacturers gearboxes, gears and precision machine parts. Janie Curtis, who is now the owner (Stuart has passed away), has been with Curtis Machine for 39 years. Our engineers design right angle bevel, off-angle bevel and parallel shaft gearboxes. Custom gearboxes are designed to meet the customer’s exact needs. Standard gearboxes are available with engineering drawings on our website at: www.curtismachine.com. Reverse engineering of gearboxes is also done. Flanges and spline shafts are frequently incorporated into the designs. Curtis generates gears that are straight bevel, spiral bevel, spur, helical, hypoid & face gears in our 56,000 sq. ft. factory in Dodge City, Kansas, USA. Curtis uses these gears (up to 33” O.D.) in standard and special designed gearboxes able to carry from fractional horsepower to over 100,000 lbs. inch of torque in our standard line & larger special designs. Curtis products are all Made In The USA.

These gearboxes are used in many applications including steering of armored personnel carriers, buses and trucks, pump drives for amphibious fighting machines, fan drives to cool radiators, etc. The quality of our work is certified using our two CMM’s (coordinate measuring machines). Curtis holds quality certifications at the ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D level. The Curtis factory has state of the art machine tools including a Gleason Phoenix bevel gear generator, CNC Nakamura-Tome “One Hit” turning centers, CNC turning and milling up to 7’x4’x3’ block. Our new robot feeds two new CNC milling centers. These new machine tools help Curtis to continually put downward pressure on our costs. Curtis holds GSA Schedule 47QMCA19D0010. Curtis currently holds contracts supplying precision machined parts to the DLA.
