THE POWER OF CUMMINS INC.
Founded in 1919, Cummins was born from the unlikely partnership between a banker, W.G. Irwin, and an inventor, Clessie Cummins.
United by their belief in the power of ideas and the potential of hard work, they envisioned the transformative capabilities of the diesel engine. As one of the 200 companies licensed to produce diesel engines, Cummins leveraged existing technology to make diesel a reliable, everyday power source.
Cummins' first product, the HVID diesel engine, produced 6 horsepower and debuted in April 1919. It took 18 years before the company turned its first profit in 1937. Cummins stock went public in 1947, marking the beginning of its storied journey of growth and innovation.
MILITARY FOCUS
Since the 1970s, Cummins has been at the forefront of developing new engine technologies for the U.S. Army, a journey that began with delivering products during WWII. Our longstanding relationship as a supplier to the Army, combined with insights from veterans within our workforce, has been crucial in understanding and meeting our customers' real needs.
Cummins values the unique talents, contributions and core set of values veterans bring to our workforce. To reflect this, we have set ambitious goals for veteran employment representation at all levels of our organization, aiming to match or exceed the representation in the communities we serve. By doing so, we leverage the inherent skills and diverse perspectives of veterans, gaining a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
These goals hold Cummins accountable to our commitment to building a workforce that reflects the communities we serve. They also reinforce the message that Cummins thrives on the power of difference.
HOW WE DO IT
COMMITMENT TO INCLUSION
Cummins is proud to be recognized by Military Friendly® Employers and the UK’s Armed Forces Covenant, standards that measure an organization’s commitment, effort, and success in creating sustainable and meaningful benefits for the military community. Further, Cummins’ unwavering commitment to create inclusive environments includes supporting veterans and their families not only in the workplace, but also in the communities where Cummins has a presence.
POWERING YOUR POTENTIAL
At Cummins, we power the world with our exceptional products and people, and we look to military veterans to help us stay successful and at the forefront of innovation. We believe hiring military veterans is one of the best decisions an organization can make. Veterans are adaptive learners, collaborators, and lead and serve with passion and pride. The desire to do excellent work and make a real difference—veterans had it in the military, and veterans can have it here, too.
Veterans can use their military occupational code to explore how their military experience and skills align with opportunities at Cummins. By entering their code on our website, the system will match them with a suitable role.
VETERANS EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUP
“By honoring veterans both past and present, we show our respect and gratitude for their service, and we acknowledge our debt to them,” says Earl Newsome, Vice President and Chief Information Officer, at Cummins. Newsome is a veteran himself and Executive Sponsor of the Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) at the company. “We also express our solidarity with those who are still serving or suffering from the effects of war.”
VERG welcomes all employees, veterans from around the world and any branch of service (active, reserve, and retired), their family members, and anyone who wishes to support veterans. VERG's mission includes recruiting and retention, veteran support, personal development for veterans, and event planning and scheduling.
From the great work Cummins VERG is progressing, to the success we are having in attracting veteran talent to our organizations through programs like DOD Skillbridge, Hiring Our Heroes, and the Civilian Work Attachments Program, Cummins is committed to further advancing veteran inclusion and belonging in our workplace and our communities,” says Newsome.
