Liberty Middle School Earns National Awards
The success of Liberty Middle School's Student 2 Student (S2S) program is evident in the national recognition it recently received. The program was honored with the Elite Team of the Year award at the Military Child Education Coalition's annual leadership conference in Washington, D.C., along with the prestigious Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Recognized Community Partnership Award. These accolades underscore the program's commitment to supporting military-connected students and fostering strong community ties.
S2S at Liberty Middle School in Madison City is an exemplary initiative dedicated to welcoming and supporting new students, especially those from military families. The transition to a new school can be overwhelming, filled with anxiety and uncertainty, particularly for military children who frequently relocate due to their parents' careers. The S2S program eases this transition by ensuring that every new student has a peer to rely on from day one, making the move less daunting.
Eighth graders Kate Miller and Grant Jauken, who are active participants in S2S, embody the program's core values: fostering a sense of belonging and creating a safe, inclusive environment. Grant emphasizes that the goal is to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, feel comfortable and can find friendship and enjoyment at school.
The program's significance is especially pronounced in middle school, a time of crucial social and emotional development. S2S co-sponsors Benita Tunstill and Kitty Mingus understand the unique challenges faced by middle school students, recognizing that this period is essential for establishing supportive peer relationships. Mingus, a military spouse, personally understands the difficulties of frequent relocations and the importance of a welcoming community.
Beyond just a welcoming committee, S2S members actively engage with the local military community. They visit the Tut Fann State Veterans Home monthly to express gratitude to veterans, a gesture that resonates deeply with both the students and the veterans they meet.
In addition to ongoing support for new students, the S2S team organizes events like Veterans Day ceremonies and the Dandelion Gala for military families, reinforcing their dedication to creating a welcoming and supportive school environment. Through their efforts, Liberty Middle School's S2S program has set a high standard for student-led initiatives aimed at easing transitions and building community.
Liberty is honored to be part of the Alabama Purple Star School program, established by the Alabama Legislature. This designation recognizes the school's commitment to supporting military students and their families, ensuring a smooth transition as they move to new homes and schools.
