Hardcopy Reprint Permissions:

ARMY Magazine grants permission for limited reprinting of ARMY Magazine content for the following uses:

• Academic/Instructional (limited to enrolled students and relevant faculty members)
• Professional Development (limited to members of the organization/command)
• Institutional Information (limited to internal distribution within an organization)
• Non-profit/Non-commercial Newsletters* (limited to a single use for one issue)
• Academic or Professional Journals *(limited to a single use for one issue)
• Industry (limited to non marketing, internal distribution, as “Institutional” above)

The following credit must appear on all reprints (insert pertinent bracketed information) :

“From ARMY Magazine, [month year]. Copyright [year] by the Association of the U.S. Army. Limited reprint permission granted by AUSA."

Reprints in this case are limited to individual articles. If an entire issue is desired, extra copies of the magazine may be requested to fulfill requirements (see “Back Issues and Extra Copies”)

ARMY Magazine is not a publishing house, so agencies wishing to reprint ARMY Magazine material must use their own means to do so (refer to digital versions below).

Any other reprint requests not covered by the above list should be sent, in writing, to ARMY Magazine via regular U.S. Postal mail (address below) or e-mailed to: armymag@ausa.org

*In the case of journals and newsletters, please forward a copy of the publication containing the reprint to ARMY Magazine:

Electronic (Digital) Copies:

ARMY Magazine, although not a web magazine, posts selected material online in the ARMY Magazine section of the AUSA website. Online features and special sections, in particular, are archived in pdf format to facilitate reprint use. Feel free to download these for limited use (as specified above). Material that is not posted online is not available for digital distribution through ARMY Magazine or AUSA. Persons wishing electronic versions of this material may scan the magazine for themselves to produce digital versions for limited use (as noted above) or use the ProQuest® online information service to access a comprehensive digital version of the magazine (see next paragraph for details).

The ProQuest® online information service provides access to thousands of current periodicals and newspapers, many updated daily and containing full-text articles from 1986. ARMY Magazine is entirely digitized and available through the ProQuest® digital database service. Digital periodical archives, like ProQuest®, are accessible at most libraries (public, university, Army service school and DoD) and also at research facilities and various learning centers. Call or visit the nearest library or other archive facility to see if they subscribe to the ProQuest® database. See the ProQuest® web site for more information: http://www.proquest.com/

Older issues of ARMY Magazine are also likely to be stored on microfilm at similar institutions and articles can be printed off through these archives as well.

Posting ARMY Magazine Material on the Web:

Public Access Web Sites: We do not release ARMY Magazine material for reposting on public–access web sites. We do, however, maintain an extensive online archive of selected ARMY Magazine articles, and we invite other web sites to summarize or extract articles of interest and to provide links to them in our archives. ARMY Magazine archives are maintained indefinitely to encourage and support such linking. If an article is not posted on our web site, then it is not available for linking.

Limited Access Web Sites: For ARMY Magazine material that is not posted in our online archive, we do allow limited reposting in limited access web venues in support of academic, command, governmental, or institutional use. Web access must be password protected and limited to internal organizational users or course enrollees. As with hardcopy reprints, the agency wishing to post material under these circumstances must use their own means to produce a useable digital version.

Picture Reprints:

AUSA and ARMY Magazine retain the rights to all images. However, for non wire service images, limited, non commercial, non marketing use is allowed for local presentations, command information, internal organizational use, academic or instructional purposes, and for personal use. In the above cases, images must be limited to single use in the original vehicle and not distributed further. All such images must include the photo credit: “ARMY Magazine”; if the image is a Dennis Steele photo, then the credit line should read: “ARMY Magazine, Dennis Steele.”

Digital Images: Unfortunately, ARMY Magazine is simply not staffed to respond to the exploding demand for digital images in the Powerpoint ™era. However, selected images may be available online in our archives. If so, these digital images can be downloaded for use as specified above. For any images not posted online, users must produce their own digital versions by scanning from the magazine (for limited use as specified above) or by going to the public digital archive for themselves (where in fact many images originate). See “Public Domain Images” below for other digital image options.

Wire Service Images: Some of the images that appear in ARMY Magazine are purchased from wire services. We do not have the right to authorize the re-use of wire service images. Be sure to check the photo credit line of all images, and do not copy or reproduce wire service images in any way. Contact the wire service in question.

Public Domain Images: Some of the images found in ARMY Magazine are public domain pictures (most often credited as U.S. Army or DoD). For those interested in digital versions of these images, they can often be found and downloaded directly from one of the following two image archives:

Back Issues and Extra Copies of the Magazine:

Limited copies of the most recent Non-Green Book ARMY Magazine (less than two years old) are available through the ARMY Magazine office. Back issues of Army Green Books (the October issue) are not maintained in the ARMY Magazine office beyond 6 months. Contact the editorial assistant if you would like to receive five or more copies of a recent issue:

For reference use, bound volumes of ARMY Magazine are sent to post and installation libraries, and larger non DoD libraries may have bound volumes of ARMY Magazine (along with other periodicals) on their shelves. Older issues of ARMY Magazine may be on hand in these places.
