AUSA Podcast Features Hero Captain, Guard Trailblazer

In March, the Association of the U.S. Army’s “Army Matters” podcast will highlight the inspiring stories of a Medal of Honor recipient and an Army National Guard trailblazer.
First up is an episode featuring retired Capt. Flo Groberg, who received the nation’s highest award for valor for tackling a suicide bomber in Afghanistan.
In 2012, while on his second deployment to Afghanistan, Groberg was the personal security detachment commander for Task Force Mountain Warrior, responsible for the safety of 28 coalition and Afghan National Army personnel.
On Aug. 8, 2012, the soldiers set out to the provincial governor’s compound in Asadabad for a weekly security meeting, according to an Army account. As the patrol neared the compound, Groberg spotted a man who was wearing a suicide vest. Acting quickly, Groberg pushed the attacker away from the group, but the vest still exploded, killing four people and seriously injuring Groberg.
During the podcast, Groberg will discuss how his childhood in France shaped the person he became, how his recovery from the attack taught him many lessons, and what it’s like being a comic book character.
The episode is available on March 12.
On March 26, the podcast will feature retired Maj. Gen. Linda Singh in an episode titled “A Twisted Tale: From Pretzels to the National Guard.”
At 17, Singh was homeless and working at a pretzel stand in a suburban Baltimore mall when she met a National Guard recruiter. Their conversation led to a 38-year Army career, culminating in Singh serving as the first woman and African American adjutant general of the Maryland National Guard.
For the podcast, Singh shares how she overcame several obstacles in her youth, including sexual assault, to become the leader she is, and the lessons and highlights of her Army career.
