AUSA Announces 2024 Scholarship Awards

The Association of the U.S. Army is announcing the award of its national scholarships for 2024 valued at more than $324,000.

Forty-two scholarships are being awarded to AUSA Premium members.

Three full-ride scholarships are awarded for Trident University, an accredited online institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees that gives credit for leadership and professional experience. Each scholarship is valued at $48,000.

The recipients are Alicia Moltner Morrow, Kayla Merrick and Megan Janish.

Moltner Morrow is a military family member who plans to major in information technology at Florida International University, while Merrick is a military family member who wants to become a speech-language pathologist and is looking to obtain a master’s degree in communication disorders. Janish, an Army spouse who is a substitute teacher and tutor, is aiming to earn a doctorate in educational technology from Liberty University.

STEM, Medical Scholarships

Two $10,000 scholarships sponsored by the Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium, a nonprofit biomedical consortium that collaborates with the Army Medical Research and Development Command, are awarded to Ashley Mayr and Joshua Isfan.

Mayr, an Army spouse, is a nursing student at Ozarks Technical Community College in Springfield, Missouri, where she is working to obtain her licensed practical nurse certification.

Isfan, inspired by the medical team that helped his brother overcome a congenital heart disease, wants to become an oncologist and plans to attend the University of Alabama to study biology.

Two Joseph P. and Helen T. Cribbins Scholarships, honoring the memory and legacy of Joseph and Helen Cribbins, longtime supporters of America’s Army and AUSA, are awarded to Katherine Halick and Owen Amirault.

Each scholarship is valued at $10,000.

Halick is a military family member and recent high school graduate who plans to attend Virginia Tech and study exercise and health sciences. Her goal is to become an Army surgeon.

Amirault is an AUSA member who also is a recent high school graduate. He plans to study biomedical engineering at Virginia Tech.

In honor of the past chairman of AUSA’s Board of Directors, six Nicholas D. Chabraja Scholarships valued at $5,000 each are awarded to Olivia Downs, Gayle Ryan, Tyler Kleinsasser, Margaret Burch, Matthew Mingus and Austin Anderson.

Downs is a military family member who is studying biomedical engineering at the University of Mississippi; Ryan is a military family member who’s studying neuroscience at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island; and Kleinsasser is an AUSA member who’s studying engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.

Burch is a military family member and recent high school graduate who plans to study biochemistry at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri, with the eventual goal of becoming a physician assistant; Mingus is a military family member who is studying information systems at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh; and Anderson is a military family member who’s studying forensic biology at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.  

Vuono, General Studies scholarships

The GEN Carl E. Vuono Leadership Scholarship, valued at $10,000, honors the former Army chief of staff who served on AUSA’s Board of Directors for 20 years.

It is awarded to Rachel Oppmann, a military family member who is a recent high school graduate. She plans to major in engineering technology and theatre at Middle Tennessee State University.

Two new MilDef Way Scholarships, each for $5,000, are awarded to Megan Rhodes, a military family member working toward a master’s in school counseling from the University of Central Florida, and Clayton Ulm, a military family member and graduate student studying health behavior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

MilDef specializes in rugged information technology for the military, government and critical infrastructure sectors, and the company provides hardware, software and services in the harshest conditions and most challenging environments.

Eight SMA Leon Van Autreve Scholarships are awarded in honor of the former sergeant major of the Army who died in 2002.

A $25,000 Van Autreve scholarship is awarded to Tori Stuart, a military family member who is working toward a master’s in physician assistant studies at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.

A $10,000 Van Autreve scholarship is awarded to Lucy Pickett, a military family member who is pursuing a doctorate degree in nursing from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

A $5,000 Van Autreve scholarship is awarded to Chloe Puhalovic, a military family member who recently earned her bachelor’s degree in political science and is now looking to get a law degree.

Five Van Autreve scholarships of $2,000 each also are awarded. The recipients are Maya McLeod, a military family member studying at the Cleveland Institute of Art; Autumn Kern, an AUSA member and recent high school graduate who plans to study history at the University of Washington; Rana Ibrahim, a military family member pursuing a doctorate in biomedical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey; Melissa Holland, an AUSA member and recent high school graduate who plans to study psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology; and Sgt. 1st Class Jonathan Torres, who is pursuing an MBA at the University of Charleston, West Virgnia.

Completed Coursework and Delta Dental

Eight Completed Coursework scholarships, each worth $2,500, are awarded to help with debt from recent completion of college courses or professional certifications.

Recipients include Brewer Sicilian, a military family member and recent high school graduate who plans to study business at the University of Florida; Brendan Marshall, an AUSA member who’s studying computer engineering at Michigan Technological University; Jenaya Bustamante, an AUSA member who is studying clinical psychology at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland; and retired Sgt. Maj. Mike Howard, who is pursuing a master’s in fine arts from Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia.

The remaining recipients are Ryan Dukes, a military family member pursuing a master’s in mechanical engineering from North Carolina State University; Kenneth Sparks, a retired soldier who is pursuing a degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Alaska in Anchorage; Bailey Phillips, a military family member who is studying biology at Texas Tech University with the goal of going to medical school and becoming a neurosurgeon; and Henry Fink, a military family member studying aerospace engineering at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

Ten Delta Dental Oral Health and Wellness Scholarships, each $2,000, are awarded to applicants pursuing health and wellness training, including dentistry, nursing, home health care or caregiver training.

Recipients include Parker Wilkinson, a military family member who is studying neuroscience at Vanderbilt University in Nashville; MacKenzie Perry, a military family member studying dental hygiene at Northern Virginia Community College; retired Lt. Col. Madelfia Abb, who is pursuing a doctorate in counseling at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro; Alexis Adams, a military family member studying nursing at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia; and Rosalee Lascano, a military family member and recent high school graduate who plans to study biology at the University of South Alabama with the goal of going to medical school to become a doctor.

The other recipients are Leonard Bruce, a military family member and recent high school graduate who plans to study physical therapy at Auburn University in Alabama; Ashley Patterson, a military family member studying biology with a concentration in pre-medical sciences at the University of Texas at San Antonio; Carl Witte, a military family member and recent high school graduate who plans to study dentistry at Alvernia University in Reading, Pennsylvania; Micayla Herlihy, a military family member and recent high school graduate who plans to study biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; and McKenzie Cox, an AUSA member pursuing a doctorate in dental surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
