The Army is seeking eligible captains, master sergeants and chief warrant officers 4 to apply for the Maj. Gen. Edwin “Forrest” Harding Fellowship.

Applications are being accepted until Sept. 10.

“The Harding Fellowship produces leaders who strengthen the Army profession with their deep expertise in branch matters and superior communications skills,” according to the Harding Project website.

Soldiers selected to be Harding Fellows complete a one-year accelerated master’s degree program at the University of Kansas’ William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications. They then serve as editors-in-chief of their branch journal for two years.

The fellowship’s namesake, Harding, renewed Infantry and Infantry Journal in the 1930s.

“Like the observer controllers who serve at our combat training centers, these leaders will return to operational units as experts in their branches with superior communications skills,” Gen. Gary Brito, commanding general of Army Training and Doctrine Command, said in an Army news release.

This year, the Army will select one fellow each for Infantry, Air Defense, Military Intelligence Professional Bulletin, Protection, Army Sustainment and Special Warfare. The service will seek candidates from other branches next year.

“The Army needs journals that stimulate and disseminate military thought,” according to the Harding Project website. “The Harding Fellows drive both points, linking leaders to win wars. Candidates from select branches should apply immediately … and look forward to starting at the University of Kansas next summer.”
