Scholarship Awards Banquet and Army Birthday Celebration
Severe storms that blew through last Thursday evening did not deter seventeen deserving student recipients from their scholarship awards at Fairfax-Lee Chapter's 2019 Scholarship Awards banquet and Army Birthday celebration. Approximately fifty chapter members, family, and friends celebrated student excellence with the distribution of $10,000 in scholarships.
The guest speaker for the event was Dr. William Forrest Crain, the Director for the Center for Army Analysis who commented on the importance of education in attaining your dreams and that you create your own "luck" by being prepared when future opportunities arise.
Using the banquet as a membership meeting, Dr. Gordon Sumner presided over the election of Ms. Nancy Jean-Louise as Chapter President, taking the place of outgoing president LTC (R) Ken Britt. Ms. Kathy Callahan was reelected to a second term as 1st Vice President. They will both serve two-year terms starting June.
Following the awarding of scholarships, the chapter celebrated the Army’s 244th Birthday, with brief words from BG (R) Guy Sands-Pingot who spoke on the founding of our Army in 1775 and how George Washington came to be the first Commander of the Continental Army. This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony to close out the evening.
