MG Mark R. Stammer

Commanding General, United States Army South

Major General Stammer enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1982 and served with the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1stCavalry Division. He was honorably discharged in January 1985 to attend the University of Houston and upon graduation, commissioned as an Infantry Officer. MG Stammer earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston, a Master of Science in Foundations and Adult Education from Kansas State University and a Master of Art in National Security Strategy and Policy from the College of Naval Warfare.

His command assignments include Alpha Company and HHC 3-505th PIR, 82nd ABN DIV and 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry (Airborne) at Vicenza, Italy and Task Force Rock in Zabol, Afghanistan in support of OEF. MG Stammer commanded the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd ABN DIV and Task Force 1/82 in Al Anbar, Iraq in support of OIF. He went on to serve as the Commander, Operations Group, Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, LA and later served as the Commanding General of Joint Task Force-North, Fort Bliss, TX. He served as the Senior Commander for Fort Campbell, KY, and as the Commanding General of Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa in Djibouti, Africa.

MG Stammer's key staff assignments include Battalion S3, for the 2-504 PIR and Brigade S3, for the 504th PIR. He served on the Joint Staff as an Operations Officer, J3, Joint Operations Directorate, and as Executive Assistant to the Vice Director for Operations, J3.  While assigned to The Joint Staff, he served in Afghanistan as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Combined Forces Command – Afghanistan.  He later served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G3, for the Southern European Task Force (Airborne), in Vicenza, Italy. He served as the Deputy Commanding General for Operations in the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), and most recently as the Deputy Commanding General for I Corps, JBLM, WA.

MG Stammer’s decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (1 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Legion of Merit (3 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Bronze Star Medal (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Bronze Star Medal (with “V” Device), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters), Air Medal (with “V” Device), and the Army Commendation Medal (2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters). He has earned the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, The Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, as well as Venezuelan, Italian, and German Parachutist Badges. MG Stammer has been honored with the Order of Saint Maurice Centurion Medallion, the Order of Saint George Bronze Medallion, and the Order of Saint Barbara.
