Chapter TBI Project Mission Statement

Our objective is to bring the Military Intrepid Spirit Process (ISP) to Lexington for our Guard, Reserve, Veteran, and larger civilian population while combining research and longitudinal study to improve patient TBI Diagnosis, Treatment, and the ISP.

We will also provide a strong stimulus for communication and cooperation for ground breaking improvements in TBI clinical care through sponsored periodic conferences and seminars with leading edge researchers and practitioners. These efforts will lead to world class best practice and capability resident in Lexington for the betterment of all who suffer TBI in the region and for a model of combined University and Veterans Administration cooperation for the benefit of non-active duty personnel and the larger total civilian community that experiences TBI.

TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY (TBI) PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The objective of the Cpl Bill McMillan- Bluegrass Chapter Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Program is to build community support and resources to amplify the many ongoing activities by the University of Kentucky to significantly furthering the body of knowledge and practice of diagnosis and treatment of concussions or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) to the point of becoming a universally recognized Center of Excellence for TBI research, diagnosis and treatment. We recognize that TBI sources of injury can be divided into five major groupings in our community. They are in order of frequency of occurrence; automobile accidents, sports injuries, both Industrial and Home injury and last, Military Injuries. The latter along with professional and college/high school/junior high sports have received the bulk of recent national publicity.

CHAPTER INVOLVEMENT

The Chapter will do fund raising and information collection, coordination and dissemination to include periodically sponsoring University level conferences to review state of the art practices with TBI. For other broad reach communication see below. We will commit to a five year program of fund raising, information gathering and communication, grant investigation and application and conferences to assist UK in becoming a world class, center of excellence for TBI while affording the many Kentuckians, especially the local community the best treatment in the country for TBI. We plan to partner with many diverse groups initially in Central KY, but also across the State in our activities to insure a robust environment for change. Representative of those we would want to get involved would include private individuals, corporations and civic and professional groups as donors, care givers and patients. This would include business, churches, civic organizations to include Veterans and Military Service Organizations. Two principle areas of local focus will be the KY National Guard Soldiers with TBI problems and the local VA Hospital and Major Clinics Operations, with the Hospital being adjacent to the University and the Major Clinics and Treatment Facility being across town. Civilian cases would also be included.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Operations are overseen by a small board of directors meeting quarterly to oversee execution of a three year horizon operating plan (updated yearly) and implemented by an executive committee, all volunteers.

COMMUNICATIONS

Monthly TBI update newsletters and use of a portion of the AUSA Chapter website would initially provide the outlet for communication. Public service announcement through Clear Channel and Cumulus Communication are definitely possible. Representatives from both organizations have expressed an interest in supporting our activity. The objective will be to build a strong, broad based community support through individual, corporate and civic organizations for fundraising and other program support as the University of Kentucky develops a national presence and a local resource for state of the art diagnosis and treatment of TBI. The communication of the positive results of ongoing conferences, research, diagnosis and treatment of TBI and the types and occurrences of community support will be featured.

NETWORKING WITH LIKE MINDED ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS

The Chapter and the Program team are very interested in networking with like minded individuals and organizations as they work to improve diagnosis and treatment. Through face to face meetings, seminars and other current means of communication we are interested in staying abreast of the latest activities in this area of study and evaluation.

We therefore propose to tie in all those interested into our monthly newsletter to inform those interested individuals of our findings and activities to include a schedule of upcoming significant events we are involved in or are attending or getting information back after they are held.
