Greetings from the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), our Army’s and our soldiers’ professional organization. This year we recognize a great noncommissioned officer and former sergeant major selected as our 2015 Sergeant Major of the Army William G. Bainbridge Medal recipient.Sgt. Maj. David G. Martinez, USA, Ret., served in every leadership position from team leader to sergeant major.Martinez served in a wide variety of assignments in CONUS and overseas to include Germany and Korea.During his Army career, he held assignments of increasing responsibility in the areas of maintenance and material support.Martinez’s last active duty assignment was as the G-3 sergeant major for the 19th Expeditionary Command based at Camp Henry, Korea. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with two oak af clusters, and the Army Achievement Medal with six oak leaf clusters.Following his retirement, he became a Department of the Army civilian employee and is currently serving as the director for maintenance for the United States Army Material Support Command in Korea. In this important position, he is responsible for overseeing a wide range of maintenance programs, including the Eighth Army Theater Sustainment Repair Program and Theater Sustainment Repair and Return.During his tenure as director of the Army Materiel Support Command, Martinez has repeatedly achieved the highest standards during audits, becoming one of two Army organizations to achieve the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) maximum maturity rating.Martinez has been and continues to be a tireless supporter of the Association of the United States Army and the soldiers and families the Association represents.A member of AUSA’s Korea Chapter for over 10 years, Martinez has enhanced and improved the relationship with local civic and business leaders to amplify the chapter’s support efforts. For nine consecutive years, he has run the Korea Chapter’s golf tournament that is the most popular "good neighbor" event held at Camp Walker.Martinez also is responsible for hosting the Association of the United States Army’s Victory Party and Right Arm Nights where soldiers are bused in from surrounding installations to participate, and a holiday program delivering hot pizzas to every soldier and firefighter on duty.Since becoming chapter president in 2013, Martinez has worked to expand the chapter’s locally operated programs across the entire country, ultimately resulting in increased corporate and individual memberships. While these examples reflect a great military and Army civilian career, his selfless service with the Association’s Korea Chapter and his far reaching service in the community have brought people together and created a team of teams. While he has changed his uniform from military to civilian, what has not changed is his desire to serve our Army, our soldiers and their families. He continues to be part of something far greater than himself.Just as he served as a role model for his soldiers and leaders in uniform, he continues to serve as a role model for us all after retirement from the Army by demonstrating what can be done by building a team of volunteers who make a difference.Sgt. Maj. David G. Martinez has played a key role in developing the bonds of trust among Army commands; the installation and unit leaders across multiple bases; local government and civic leaders; and dozens of community businesses who look for opportunities to support soldiers and their families. It is with great honor we recognize this great soldier as the 2015 Sergeant Major of the Army William G. Bainbridge Medal recipient. Now more than ever America’s Army needs AUSA and AUSA needs your membership support.Membership is the volume knob to ensure your voice is amplified many times over and heard throughout the halls of Congress, from sea to shining sea across this country, and throughout every small town and community in-between. Keep America’s Army Strong!Take a Stand! Still Serving, Still Saluting!
