Green Book: Army status reports
The 2015-2016 issue of ARMY Magazine’s Green Book takes a close look at the accomplishments and challenges facing the U.S. Army as changing world events see force structure getting smaller although more than 45,000 soldier remain deployed.Included in the special issue is the first status report of the new Army chief of staff, Gen. Mark A. Milley, and the final status report of Secretary of the Army John McHugh, who is resigning after six years as the service’s top civilian leader. In his status report, retired Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, president and CEO of the Association of the U.S. Army, says he worries the Army could drop below 1 million combined active, Army Guard and Army Reserve soldiers, posing a serious risk to the nation."Affordability shouldn’t be how a powerful nation decides the size of the one military branch with the unique capability of sustained dominance on the ground anywhere on the globe," writes Sullivan, who was the 32nd Army chief of staff.Adding, "Ours is a force that can mobilize and quickly respond to man-made and natural crises with a customized set of capabilities to meet any demand and also provide foundational services used by the other military services, civilian agencies and allies."Sullivan also stressed, "Doing more with less has long been the soldier way, but there are limits to what can be accomplished by merely trying harder."Our soldiers and their colleagues in the Army’s civilian workforce are understandably weary of always looking for corners to cut, and we need to be concerned about their morale."In addition to more than 40 status reports, the 300-page magazine contains weapons, installation and Army staff guides. The Green Book cover is a photo of Sgt. Ronald S. Gray, from the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, riding in the gunner position of a Stryker armored vehicle during a May 14 parade in Brasov, Romania. The photograph is a symbol of the presence the U.S. Army maintains internationally and the commitment to global stability despite forces being downsized.Green Book copies will be available at the AUSA Pavilion, Exhibit Hall A, Booth 407, at the Annual Meeting and Exposition, held October 12 to 14 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
