Maj. Gen. Jody Daniels, commander of the Army Reserve’s 88th Regional Readiness Division and a former chief of staff for Army Forces Command, has been nominated to be the next chief of the Army Reserve.

If confirmed by the Senate, Daniels will receive her third star and become the first woman to lead a major Army component. She would succeed Lt. Gen. Charles Luckey, who has led the Army Reserve since June 2016.

Daniels has more than 35 years of service on active duty and in the Army Reserve in support and leadership roles. She previously served as assistant deputy chief of staff for Army intelligence at the Pentagon and as director of the intelligence and knowledge development directorate at U.S. Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany.

She commanded the 87th Army Reserve Support Command (East), in Birmingham, Alabama; was deputy commanding general of First Army Division East at Fort Meade, Maryland; and was commander of the Theater Support Command, which consisted of 11 military intelligence battalions.

Daniels was chief of plans and integration and later director of intelligence for the Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq in Baghdad. She also has deployed to Kosovo.

In her civilian career, Daniels was director of advanced programs for Lockheed Martin’s Advanced Technology Laboratories and led the defense contractor’s Contextual Systems Laboratory. She also was a manager and engineer in the company’s Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Daniels has also served on the Defense Advanced Research Programs Agency’s Information Science and Technology Review Board and on Drexel University’s Computer Science Department Advisory Board.

As commander of the 88th Regional Readiness Division, Daniels is also senior commander of Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, and oversees the services and base operations support for more than 52,000 Reserve soldiers and more than 5,000 Active Guard and Reserve soldiers and civilians serving in 19 states.

If confirmed, Daniels would take command of the Reserve’s close to 200,000 soldiers in the U.S. and overseas.
