2006 Strickland Winners

2006 Strickland winners

The Sergeant Major Larry L. Strickland Educational Leadership Award winners are Command Sergeant Major David Davenport Sr., First Sergeant Gilbert Sutton, Jr., and First Sergeant Judith Jones.

The Strickland Award is named in honor of SGM Larry L. Strickland. Larry was serving as Sergeant Major to the Army’s Deputy Chief-of-Staff for personnel (G-1) when he became a victim of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.

The Strickland Award is presented annually during the Sergeant Major of the Army Conference with senior NCOs during the AUSA annual Meeting.

This year’s recipients best exemplify the Army’s vision and are influencing others in shaping future leaders while providing excellent stewardship of the nation’s most precious resource – our Soldiers.

CSM David S. Davenport Sr., Budingen, Germany, has not only sought to develop himself as an Army leader through education, he has also provided the same opportunity for his Soldiers.

He is currently enrolled in Norwich University’s Masters in Business Administration program, maintaining a GPA of 3.95 and has encouraged all of his first sergeants to enroll in college as well.

First Sergeant Gilbert Sutton, Jr., Delta Company 369 AG Battalion implemented a program to increase the civilian education level of cadre and drill sergeants in his unit. As a result, 100% of the company’s NCOs are currently enrolled in college courses.

First Sergeant Judith Jones, A Company 31st Combat Support Hospital, displayed initiative and a willingness to help Soldiers pursuing educational goals.

She established off duty classes for pharmacy technicians and has helped over 100 Soldiers pass their certification. Currently, 64 of 138 Soldiers in her company are attending off duty schooling.

This year each of our 2006 scholarship winners received a $4000.00 check and a trophy during the AUSA annual meeting. And this year, each received a laptop computer courtesy of our friends at Pioneer Services.

The Strickland award recipients will have their names engraved on an eagle permanently displayed at the Sergeants Major Academy.
