Parting Thoughts:
12/29/2003

From retiring Sgt. Major of the Army Jack Tilley:
  • I am very concerned about the operational tempo and its effects on safety, divorce rates and suicides. I think the Army is short about 40,000 people, to be honest.
  • A lot of people are working to...restructure. They're doing what's right for the Army.
  • We're going to have back-to-back deployments for our soldiers. We need to make sure that the chain of command knows that that's happening and tries to stop it.
  • The last set of quarters I lived in before I became Sergeant Major of the Army was 940 square feet. Now think about that, 29 years in the Army, and I lived in a set of quarters that was 950 square feet, and everybody said, "Hell, I'm taking care of you".
  • Tricare is always going to be an issue. It's associated with cost. We need to educate people about Tricare, what it does, and what it doesn't do.
