Did You Know? - Army Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)
04/24/2008
There has been some discussion and misunderstanding about Army UAS and their deployment participation in both Iraq (OIF) and Afghanistan (OEF) combat zones. Here are the facts:
Army has 4 UAS systems supporting the troops in both theaters:
Raven
,
Shadow
,
Hunter
and
Warriors
.
Raven
, the smallest system employed is at the small unit level with every deployed BCT. The Raven system is manned and operational by Soldiers.
The three larger systems,
Shadow
,
Hunter
and
Sky Warrior
, are deployed, manned by Soldiers or in some cases contractors, and operate at a level of the BCT and above for operational control and utilization.
Of the total 671 UAS systems, 391 are deployed.
Shadow UAS
: 22 platoons - 92 aircraft;
Hunter UAS
: 7 systems - 12 aircraft
;
Warrior UAS
: 13 deployed
Hours flown in theater by all systems: 467k
Because of the size of the Army and intensity of combat operations, the employment stats exceed proscribed doctrine of employment. A larger Army in Force Structure and End Strength would allow current doctrine for deployment cycle. Today that cycle exceeds the one-third doctrine standard.
