Bill Introduced to Increase Benefits of the Montgomery G. I. Bill
05/01/2008

U.S. Senators Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Richard Burr (R-NC) and John McCain (R-AZ) introduced the “Enhancement of Recruitment, Retention and Readjustment through Education Act”. The legislation proposes reform to the Montgomery G.I. Bill by increasing educational benefits to active duty personnel to $1,500 a month and $2,000 a month after 12 years of service to increase retention. The bill also calls for an increase in benefits to the National Guard and Reserve, a transfer of half of the benefits to spouse/child after 6 years of service or 100% after 12 years of service and a student repayment program which will allow Service Members to use up to $6,000 a year to pay back loans or enroll in a matching program for debt-free graduation. The legislation is also asking for service academy graduates and Senior Reserve Officer’s Training Corps who continue their service to have access to the MGIB benefits.
