Army Senior Leaders Address End-Strength Concerns (05/01/2002)

The senior civilian and uniformed leadership of the Army, in their annual testimony to Congress on the Army's budget and priorities for 2003, received persistent questioning about the Army's end strength and its ability to meet current and future mission requirements given the current force structure.

28th ID Proud of Selection (05/01/2002)
The commanding general of the 28th Infantry Division believes that his organization was named to be the first National Guard unit selected for an Interim Brigade Combat Team because the designated battalions "are three of the top infantry battalions in the guard."

Oct. 1 Marks Beginning of Busy Year for Division (05/01/2002)
Maj. Gen. Walter Pudlowski, commanding general of the 28th Infantry Division, appreciates the changes in the peacekeeping mission to Bosnia. This fall, he will be heading to the Balkans as commander the Multinational Force North, but now in his headquarters, close to the Pennsylvania state capitol, he sees how the mission is building a sense of teamwork in the division.

West Point, Lewis and Clark Expos Open In Oct. (05/01/2002)
In celebration of the bicentennial of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the trailblazing expedition of Lewis and Clark, the Army Historical Foundation is co-sponsoring with the Department of the Army two commemorative museum exhibitions.

Rubbermaid Home Products and Rubbermaid Commercial Products have joined forces with AUSA in sponsoring the first AUSA Army Family of the Year Volunteer Award. This award is designed to recognize the outstanding contributions that families provide to the United States Army and it will be presented Oct. 21 at AUSA's Annual Meeting in Washington.

Panel Raises Question About Raising Army End Strength (05/01/2002)
The strains on the servicemen and servicewomen in fighting the war on terrorism was a major concern to a key Senate subcommittee March 20, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told the panel and the services' personnel and recruiting chiefs that they all might have to look at increasing end strength.

Guard Sees More Integration (05/01/2002)
The director of the Army National Guard said that the reorganization of the Army staff and secretariat means that "we will send soldiers from our staff here to selected positions in the Pentagon.

Business Steps Up (05/01/2002)
"To me, that's a real uplifting thing to see how well corporate America is clearly a part of our defense as anybody else," Bob Hollingsworth, executive director of national Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve said in an interview with AUSA NEWS. Hollingsworth said without employer support for reservists, it would be difficult for the guard and reserve to conduct missions that the Department of Defense assigns to the reserve components today.

A Day He Will Never Forget (05/01/2002)
Michael Durant was terrified. He was mad as hell. He was in excruciating pain. The date was Oct. 4, 1993, and Durant, a chief warrant officer and Black Hawk helicopter pilot in the Army, was lying helplessly on the floor as a captor watched over him in a small home in Mogadishu, Somalia.

On Capitol Hill, bipartisanship is the order of the day, followed by two days of partisan bickering and retaliation. Then, its back to "let's band together, there's a war on", followed by "the________ party is letting politics get in the way of patriotism." However, there is an organization on the Hill that blends bipartisanship with patriotism and has been doing so for 15 years.

Sergeant Major of the Army Leon L. Van Autreve, U.S. Army Retired, died March 14 at his home in San Antonio, Texas. He was the 4th Sergeant Major of the Army.

Mitchell to Receive Marshall Medal (05/01/2002)
Former Sen. George J. Mitchell, D-Maine, who served as Senate majority leader, has been selected by the Association of the United States Army to receive its highest award - the George Catlett Marshall Medal - for "selfless service to the United States of America."

Hasty Mobilization New Rule (05/01/2002)
"Hasty mobilization" is the new rule for activated reservists, the chief of the Army Reserve said. Lt. Gen. Thomas Plewes said in the past, "we were giving people one to two days of notification to get to home station, a couple of days to get ready at home station, and then got to a mobilization station to be trained."
