April 18, 2008
On behalf of the more than 106,000 members of the Association of the United States Army, I write to urge you to co-sponsor H.R. 5714, the United States Army Commemorative Coin Act of 2008. This bill would require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in 2011 in recognition and celebration of the establishment of the United States Army in 1775.
Passage of this legislation would honor American Soldiers of today and yesterday, recognizing their service in war and peace. Further, it would commemorate the traditions, history and heritage of the United States Army and its role in American society from the colonial period to today.
The creation of the coin will serve another worthy purpose, as revenue from the surcharge for the Army Commemorative Coin will help fund the National Museum of the United States Army. The Army, the nation’s oldest and largest military service, is the only branch without a comprehensive national museum, celebrating, preserving, and displaying its heritage and honoring its veterans.
Please honor America’s Soldiers by co-sponsoring H.R. 5714.
