President selects new national security team

President Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate CIA Director Leon E. Panetta to be secretary of defense, and he also nominated Army Gen. David H. Petraeus to succeed Panetta at the CIA, and Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John R. Allen to succeed Petraeus as commander of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.

An intelligence-driven U.S. operation in Pakistan killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden yesterday, President Barack Obama announced in a nationally televised address from the White House late May 1.
