The 2011 Sergeant Major of the Army William G. Bainbridge Medal for exceptional service to the Noncommissioned Officer Corps was awarded to Command Sergeant Major Steven R. England, United States Army, Retired.
Command Sergeant Major England began his thirty-three year career of military service as a paratrooper and shortly thereafter joined the unit that would eventually become the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. During his service, CSM England has led and supported Army Soldiers in combat operations from Operation Just Cause to the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
While serving as commandant of Fort Bragg’s Noncommissioned Officer Academy, CSM England not only trained young Soldiers but helped to instill in them the attributes of professionalism and leadership expected from our Noncommissioned Officer Corps. CSM England’s senior leadership in the airborne community culminated in his roles as the 82d Airborne Division’s brigade and division CSM, as well as the CSM of the XVIII Airborne Corps.
For his exemplary service, CSM England has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters.
Since leaving the military CSM England has continued to serve our nation, the Army, and its Soldiers through a variety of channels. He maintains his commitment to the Fort Bragg community by serving as the Deputy Director, Plans, Training and Mobilization, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Bragg, where he works tirelessly to ensure the base runs smoothly and the community remains strong.
Command Sergeant Major England has served on AUSA’s Braxton Bragg Chapter Board of Directors since his retirement and has been intimately involved with a number of initiatives aimed at serving the community’s Soldiers and families, including distributing thousands of care packages for deployed troops, coordinating welcome-home events for returning Soldiers and supporting Army spouses through Operation Baby Shower.
CSM England also serves as the cochairman of the North Carolina Army Retiree Council, where he helps identify and address issues facing North Carolina retirees and champions efforts to increase the programs and services available to them.
In grateful recognition of his dedication and countless contributions to America’s Army, its Soldiers and their families, the Association of the United States Army proudly presented the Sergeant Major of the Army William G. Bainbridge Medal to Command Sergeant Major Steven R. England on the tenth day of October, two thousand eleven.
