2009 - Lt. Gen. Robert H. Forman

The 2009 General Creighton W. Abrams Medal for exceptional service to the United States Army was awarded to Lieutenant General Robert H. Forman, United States Army, Retired, for his outstanding service to America’s Army.

In 1951 General Forman graduated from Arizona State University with a commission as a second lieutenant of Field Artillery through the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program. This marked the beginning of his long and distinguished career as a commander, military instructor, staff officer and trainer who fought in the Korean War and served two tours in Vietnam. After more than thirty-six years of outstanding service, he retired in 1987 as the Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.

An innovative, creative and incisive leader and a member of the Association of the United States Army since it was first established, General Forman has served four terms as president of AUSA’s Fifth Region.

Realizing that the Army is served well by the Association’s volunteer leadership and its chapter members worldwide, General Forman guided membership development and encouraged programs and projects that benefit Soldiers and their families.

The strength and inspiration behind the creation of the Association’s Greater Kansas City Chapter, which now boasts more 700 members, General Forman remains active as a member of the chapter’s Board of Directors, leading such efforts as creation of a Soldier and Family Support Fund that has donated thousands of dollars to Soldiers and their families and has made substantial contributions to the Army Emergency Relief Fund.

Recognizing both the importance of furnishing the Army with its future leaders and the need to motivate our nation’s youth to become better citizens, General Forman led the way in supporting eleven senior ROTC programs and three junior ROTC programs in “The Heartland.”

Today, as a tireless, well-respected and renowned advocate for America’s Army and its many contributions to the nation, he continues to demonstrate his belief in “Soldiers taking care of Soldiers.”

In grateful recognition of his exceptional, steadfast, and visionary service, the Association of the United States Army proudly presented the General Creighton W. Abrams Medal to Lieutenant General Robert H. Forman on the fifth day of October, two thousand nine.
