The 2007 John W. Dixon Award for outstanding contributions to national defense by a member of the industrial community was presented to James A. Armour, President and Chief Executive Officer of AM General LLC.
For nearly two decades under Mr. Armour’s dynamic leadership, AM General has positively impacted the United States Armed Forces and the lives of countless warriors who have answered the “Call to Duty” with “boots on the ground.”
While AM General was a vehicle-manufacturing unit of LTV Aerospace and Defense Company, Mr. Armour—then a vice president and program manager for the High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HUMVEE—led in the development, engineering and production of this special-purpose vehicle that would revolutionize the battlefield.
Leading AM General through good times and bad—and under three different ownerships—Mr. Armour always focused on his company’s reputation for superlative customer support and service while ensuring that business was conducted with absolute integrity.
The remarkable success of the HUMVEE, known as “the finest light tactical vehicle the world has ever seen,” is due in no small measure to Mr. Armour’s tenacity, his drive for quality assurance and his outstanding rapport with the military services.
A graduate of Wayne State University, Mr. Armour holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Detroit and an honorary doctor of laws from Tri-State University.
In recognition of his dedicated service to the men and women of our Armed Forces as a well-respected and admired member of the defense-industry community, the Association of the United States Army proudly presented the John W. Dixon Award to James A. Armour on the tenth day of October, two thousand seven.
