Sue Hertling told the Association of the United States Army’s chapter presidents how important it was to hear Gen. Gordon R. Sullivan, USA, Ret., tell family members in Germany not only how important they were but also that the nation’s efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq “would have collapsed like a house of cards” without their support.

The wife of Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, speaking Oct. 9, told the presidents about how Army families are coping with changed plans, such as quick orders to Afghanistan and death.  She mentioned the strength she drew from these families.

“We must preserve this,” she said.

Mrs. Hertling was speaking the day before the formal opening of AUSA’s Annual Meeting and Exposition.
