There is a defense company based in the United Kingdom that makes compact rolls of strong composite that unroll with the flick of a wrist to form rigid, hollow poles that can be used in tactical ladder kits, combat litters and communications antenna masts.

The RolaTube technology, made by RTL Materials Limited, comes in 7.5- and 9-foot sections and is available in special kits designed to make assault ladders or stretchers that will hold up to 250 pounds, said Will Pike of www.rolatube.com at 2011 Association of the United States Army Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington.  Larger sections measuring up to 24 feet are also available for use as masts for communications antennas.
