AUSA Activities and Functions
Board of Directors
Board members include representatives from the Industrial Associate companies, AUSA members interested in serving the Chapter, commanders of the local Army organizations (40th ID, 63rd Regional Support Command, 311th Corps Support Command, Recruiting BN, Public Affairs Office) or their representatives, and the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army. A goal is to have at least one representative from every defense company in the greater Los Angeles area. The Board meets four times a year, usually at the office of the President.
Executive Committee
The Executive committee consists of the officers and several other Board members chosen by the President. These are usually people who have served on the Board for a long time or have shown particular dedication to the Chapter.
The current functions sponsored by the chapter are:
- Army Ball, to honor the birthday of the Army and present the Chapter’s contribution to the National Land Warfare Education Fund
- Annual Symposium
- Industrial Associate dinners and annual City Tavern Dinner in Washington
- Annual meeting (in conjunction with the Symposium)
- Newsletter (3-4 issues a year)
- ROTC scholarship award ceremonies (at 7 colleges)
- Support to Army Recruiting, including awards to top RA and Reserve Recruiters
- Other activities that present themselves, such as a concert by the Army Field Band, and speeches by Army leaders
Army Ball
This has traditionally been hosted by one of the corporations in the LA area and attracts about 500 guests, including senior military leaders, chief executives and senior officers of the local defense companies, and a broad spectrum of Southern California residents and political figures.
Symposium
A two-day event featuring panels on relevant topics with key speakers is presented
each year.
Election of Officers
This is done by mail ballot in May or June. The Board serves from 1 July to 30 June. Members can be nominated and elected by the Board at any meeting.
Newsletter
This is mandatory and is published three or four times a year.
ROTC Awards
The ROTC and Reserve Affairs chairman works with the Professors of Military Science at the seven local universities to develop the list of award recipients. He also arranges to have the certificates made, the checks cut, and the pistols and cases purchased. The Board of Directors approves the scholarship and pistol costs. The awards are presented by various Board members at the commissioning ceremonies at each school. The chapter also supports the Junior ROTC in the Los Angeles Unified School District by underwriting their summer encampment and providing other awards.
Industrial Associates
Industrial Associates are unique to the Greater Los Angeles Chapter. Membership costs $2500 per year. It permits each company to send two people to the Industrial Associate dinners (five or six a year). It also entitles them to purchase seats at the annual City Tavern dinner in Washington during the National AUSA Annual meeting. Membership counts toward Army Ball table point assignment.
