December 2007 - SGM(R) Bob Ruff, Chapter Secretary, delivered packaged snack cakes and small donuts to the Lynchburg National Guard Armory on 8 Nov to be used at the homecoming of the HHC, 1-116th Inf on the 9th. The snack cakes were to be added to other snack items gathered by the FRG, to be available to the families waiting for the soldiers return and for the soldiers upon their return. About 125 soldiers were expected to return to the Lynchburg Armory after serving in Kosovo, a designated combat zone, for a year. In addition to the snack cakes the Chapter provided the FRG with a check for $150.00 to help pay for the other snacks and drinks.
August 2006 - Chapter members joined several hundred family and friends at Fellowship Community Church in Salem to mark the official departure of the 1st Bn, 116th Inf Regt, 29th Inf Div (Light) to the Balkans for about 18 months of peace enforcement duties. The former 1st Bde, 29th Inf Div is now designated as the 116th Inf Bde Combat Team and adopted the title "Stonewall Brigade" to honor its linage which can be traced to militia in Staunton in 1742. Our Chapter provided three large decorated sheet cakes (photo attached) and John Crable bought 30 dozen cookies. LTC(R) Carl Matney, Chap pres, and COL(R) Dave Lofgren, Chap VP, helped the women's ministry group of the church prepare the refreshments for the reception following the official ceremony. LTC Lapthe Flora, Bn Cdr, and CSM Tony Price shared the cake cutting honors following the ceremony. LTC Flora, a chapter member, will command the battalion as Task Force Red Dragon. BG Ted Shuey, ADC of the 29th ID and a supportive Chapter member, reminded the audience of the long and gallant history of the 116th and encouraged the soldiers and their families to keep the legacy in mind as they fulfill their responsibilities during this faze of the war on terror and write a new chapter for the Stonewall Brigade.
