Letter sent to:

Senators Hagel and Durbin

April 2, 2007

On behalf of the more than 100,000 members of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), I write to thank you for introducing the Global Climate Change Security Oversight Act. This legislation is vitally important and asks the intelligence community to provide a strategic estimate of the risks posed by global climate change for countries or regions that are of particular economic or military significance to the United States or that are at serious risk of humanitarian suffering. This National Intelligence Estimate will assess the political, social, agricultural, and economic challenges for countries and their likely impact.

As chairman of the military advisory board studying potential national security impacts of climate change with the CNA Corporation, I commend you for your leadership on this critical national security issue. The analysis called for in this proposal will strengthen our ability to appropriately address the impact of climate change on national security.

AUSA stands ready to assist in implementing this important legislation.

GORDON R. SULLIVAN
General, USA Retired
