How many weeks' holiday a year are there? tree money While the shift toward fuels other than gasoline will eventually require us to fundamentally rethink how we pay for transportation, dealing with the revenue shortfall that's dragging down our economy right now requires no such daunting overhaul. A remarkable coalition of labor and business groups has asked Congress to raise the gas tax for the sake of our economy. If lawmakers in the states can pass this kind of tax reform, so can Congress. Now it's time for our elected officials to accept that keeping the gas tax cryogenically frozen at 18.4 cents per gallon is costing Americans a lot more than it's helping them.
